*A human male in gray trousers and black gloves sits alone in the field near his newly-pitched tent, taking a break from digging irrigation ditches. He wipes the sweat and grime from his face, removes his gloves, places a rock over a piece of paper to keep it from blowing away and begins to write notes, speaking aloud as he does so. He's writing a list.*
1. Elect Mayor... if the crown comes, perhaps they'll understand. We need leadership, with resources. Hope we made the right decision. Would he even be recognized? I have no idea. I'm sure he'll be happy to tax us. It's a burden I'm willing to bear if it makes this place liveable.
2. Build wall... let's hope our new mayor comes through on his end.
3. Food... I feel like I'm making zero progress on these ditches, hardly any water. Hunting only goes so far, we'll need agriculture, seeds, well, and water, that's the trickiest part. Another adventurer mentioned components for Earth Magic, give the crops a boost, but that's not my arena, not sure I'd even recognize them if I saw them. Where in blazes do I find these things without getting myself killed? I'm a fighter, good for manual labor, not magicking crops to grow. I'll keep an eye out, for all the good that'll do me.
4. Law/Order... I've read Akliceium's laws, at this point, I can probably quote them in my sleep. Technically we belong to Akliceium, but we're out here on our own. We'll need law, Akliceium probably wants us to follow theirs, and furthermore, well, they're good ones to follow. That means we'll need a sheriff or magistrate, my gut tells me this should be an elected position, given our position as a new settlement, at least for now, until the Crown choses to appoint one, if they ever do. People won't come if they can't be safe. We didn't even have the resources to hunt down and exterminate those brood, how are we supposed to protect civilians? My men are leagues away, can't call them in. Retirement was supposed to be easy.
5. People... settlers... funny how when a place has nothing, the one resource to fix it won't show up if there's nothing to be gained. Who wants to settle in a dusty patch out of the middle of nowhere? A whole stronghold of pissed off goblins as our closest neighbours. My thought is that perhaps once we've got some fortifications in place, some workable land, and something resembling safety, they'll come. Here's hoping.
6. Trade... the way I see it, a. people settle, b. they want to make money, c. the mayor needs citizens making money to tax, d. oh Gods... what's he going to charge us?
SIDE NOTE: so I've decided to settle here, this will be home... stupid. How do I even go about applying for... I don't know... citizenship? If I simply say, "I'm a citizen of ShallowFord", does that really make it so? Maybe if I get around to writing that "Wasteland Survivor's Guide" I've been toying with, I'll throw something in there about "how to become a settler/citizen, the legal way!". What am I thinking?
